A review of Thai Dusit by Anonymous written on Thursday 20th of January 2011
We visited Thai Dusit last night (19th Jan). When we arrived, at around 7pm, it was very quiet with perhaps 2 occupied tables. By the time we left at about 8.45pm the restaurant was buzzing and the atmosphere was great -it was packed out, which was not what we expected on a Wednesday evening!
We shared starters of Gai Bai Toey (Chicken marinated with coriander root, cracked black pepper & oyster sauce wrapped in pandan leaves & deep fried), and Pla Mug Tempura (Deep fried squid & onions in batter served with sweet chilli sauce). Both portions were nicely sized, and the chicken dish in particular was fantastic -we would very much recommend this. Both dishes came with sweet chilli dipping sauce and a generous salad. To be honest, neither of us much liked the chilli sauce -it tasted a bit artificial and seemed to mask the taste of any food you dipped in it, but the chicken on its own was just beautiful without it anyway, so we didn't mind leaving the sauce (can't rate the chicken enough!).
For mains we had a portion of fragrant thai steamed rice between us (which we found to be just enough for us), and ordered two curries: Massaman Gai (Thai herbs & chicken in a mild peanut curry with coconut milk and potatoes), and Kang Pha Gai (a spicy hot jungle curry with chicken, Thai herbs and vegetables). Both curries were excellent and beautifully presented, despite being very different.
The mild peanut curry was fragrant with a hint of heat, and quite rich from the creamy coconut milk. By comparison, the jungle curry was much hotter, again fragrant, but really refreshing/invigorating (felt like I was eating a proper 'cure-all!') -this curry was more like a broth.
We shared a bottle of house Rose wine (£14.25, so not the cheapest), and for pudding, we both had Mhor Keanng (Thai dusit custard baked and served with vanilla ice cream). We didn't really enjoy this to be honest, as the egg custard seemed a bit squib and 'eggy' -not what we were expecting.
In all, a very enjoyable experience: delicious food (and not too heavy), kind and attentive staff (despite the number of people in the restaurant), but admittedly a bit of a treat for us, as it can be quite pricey when you add it all together (we paid about £55 for the two us, for all the above).
Definitely recommend this restaurant -they have a helpful website which includes their different menu options and prices so you can check before you go.
We were sitting next to an American visitor and overheard him talking to one of the waitresses -he'd been staying at a hotel in the city for around 3 days and fully intended to visit Thai Dusit for his evening meal every night!
